Gandalf on cart

Every so often I get a mini that has to be painted up immediately and Gandalf was certainly one of those. I think this is the first horse I’ve painted and I’m happy with how he turned out which should help to get me painting up my other mounted minis. I painted the whole thing up quite quickly which is a testament to how much I like it.

Gandalf on cart

My first job with this mini was to stick him on a bigger base. I had an idea of what I wanted to do and  the little base he comes on was not going to allow me to do anything. I had bought a big bag of matchsticks for when I get round to building a house which I used to build the fence. I made three different types before settling on one it then got a coat of agrax earth shade and it was done.

The base was built up with the autumn and dead grass 2mm static grass, flower flock and dead grass tufts from the Luke’s APS range.

The cart was painted using the same technique I used on Grom’s chariot which is mostly dry brushing and washes. Gandalf and his horse were painted up with foundry paints charcoal black, stone gray and chestnut.

When everything was done and about to get a coat of varnish I realised Gandalf needed a set of reigns  but I had no idea what to use. I thought about using green stuff, wire or garden twine when I noticed a loose thread on an old towel. A dab of mod podge later and he was done.

Thanks for reading.
